Made in Germany
Martin and I have been recently hunting for a mattress and this is what we found glued to some of them. Under the German flag it’s written “we secure working places”.

It’s cool that this company is fighting to keep its production in the country and so securing working places for German citizens. However, I must admit that we bought another mattress, a cheaper one… most probably made in China

Alemañol
Alemañol is the combination of German (Aleman in Spanish) and Spanish (Español in Spanish). In the very long process of learning German, Alemañol has been a very useful complementary “language” in order to be able to finish a whole sentence without having to think too much about how to say a particular word in German. Unfortunately Alemañol doesn’t really help for most of the cases. But of course there are still those other (very) few cases where it does help! That’s why I still use it.
The most widely known rule of Alemañol for the case that you are trying to talk in German is to add “-EN” to the end of each Spanish word. How many times I have tried to explain the following Spanish joke to my German friends…?
Question: How do you say “to ride the bus” in German?
Answer: SubENestrujENbajEN
If you are German and have some Spanish speaker friends, ask them to explain the joke to you. I have already realized that I’m absolutely incompetent to do it.
For the case that you are trying to talk in Spanish, you should add “-O” (-OS if you want to make it plural) to the end of each German word. And for this I have the following example: a McDonald’s advertisement in Germany promoting the new Mexican products.

It seems like the German branch of McDonald’s is having some budget problems with its translator department…

Some words about the future US president
Today I woke up with the bitter taste of a bad dream. I dreamed McCain had won the US elections. It is kind of amazing that I dreamed something like this since I am a rather apolitical person.
The true is that this Obama boy has achieved to awake some interest on my person towards the American elections. And apparently I haven’t been the only person that has been affected by the magnetism of this man… otherwise he wouldn’t have been elected the new president of the United States.
I know very little about the candidate’s political proposal… only the fact that both of them have been promising “CHANGE” for the United States although it seems in the end that Obama’s promises have resulted to be more credible. In my opinion, what both candidates have been specifically promising didn’t matter much. Obama was bound to achieve the victory thanks to its charismatic personality and its proximity to ALL KIND of people.
However, according to a rather pessimistic article in the New York Times (sorry, I just read this article in an abandoned newspaper in the airport, so I cannot give the exact source) Europeans should be prepared for great disappointment, no matter who gets the presidency. In the case that McCain would have won, his mandate would have been pretty much the same to what we already know from Bush… a piece of shit. However, according to the author of this article, the victory of Obama will not satisfy Europeans either. This might be basically due to the facts that Obama has been promising the moon and setting up gigantic expectations in our poor minds. However, Obama’s promises for change might not be implemented as fast as we all expect.
In any case, and quoting what might have been the most repeated sentence in this campaign, whatever Obama will or will not do, IT CANNOT BE WORST THAN BUSH.
But let’s concentrate in some little points that I would like to comment on about Obama and his campaign.
One of his sentences --> I want people to get involved in their own democracy
Nice words indeed. I have no clue though about how does he pretend to implement this.
This involvement would have been “nice to have” the last time our ex-president (Spain) decided to send the troops to Iraq.
The greatest fears of Americans --> that he is a Muslim, or even worst, that he is a socialist or even a communist!
Apparently the fact that Obama’s middle name is Hussein has freaked the shit out of many Americans. Obama in return has been constantly showing up how Christian he is. Even in his facebook profile has he listed the bible as one of his favorite books. One of the things that shocked me when I was in the US was how religious people are. Is really disturbing that people accept that Obama took marihuana and cocaine when he was in school, but that they would never accept he being a Muslim.
Obama’s recipe for victory --> Money, Internet, his voice, and his closeness to voters
This really cool internet gadget supported by the Spanish newspaper “el Mundo” has summarized what they think are the four key elements of Obama’s success. Text is written in Spanish. But even if you cannot read Spanish I would like to encourage you to have a look. There are pretty neat videos in their original version.
Amazing here is the so called Obama’s song. It sounds like the next single of “Black eyed peas”. Below is the whole song. Can you imagine Angela Merke or Zapatero being nominated for the next MTV awards...?
I just had a quick look into Wikipedia and noticed that people in the world have already updated the information about the new elected president!
I wonder how big are the chances for a non-American-born woman to win the elections?
